What Essential is Invisible to the Eye?

The Exchange of Information through Homepages of Medical Libraries

Does the quantitative increase of information also mean qualitative changes? There is more and more information on the Internet – and for the doctors, too. But also they need it to be precise and reliable. In response central libraries of medical department of the Hungarian universities (Budapest, Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged) have been trying to meet these expectations. The aim of this poster is to introduce the webpages of these central medical libraries (http://www.lib.sote.hu, http://www.kenezy.lib.unideb.hu, http://www.pote.hu/index.php?page=bmen&mid=10&nyelv=hun&al=11, http://www.bibl.u-szeged.hu/kari/aok/aok.html). There is a special situation in Hungary. Integration of the Hungarian higher education in the Bologna-system has started since about 2000, and each organizational part of the universities (amongst libraries and – indirectly – their websites) has been affected by this process. The sites were analysed on the basis of their contents from various aspects. The basic principles of analysis are authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency and coverage. Finally the website of University Library of Karolinska Institutet is an excellent example for the analysed Hungarian websites. The poster analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the webpages of said medical libraries and whether they provide the essential information of modern medical science both in the scope of quality and quantity, or – to put it simple – whether the information reaches the intended targets such as doctors, medical students, researchers, healthcare professionals and the librarian.
