Zine Libraries and Infoshops are NOW
I am attracted to people who are not librarians by profession or education forming their own access to information through the creation of zine libraries (libraries devoted to small-run, handmade books) and infoshops (free resource centers). I wanted to uncover how and why these information resources are created, operated, and funded, and materials acquired and organized. Why is there a need outside mainstream libraries for volunteer-run spaces to ensure access to information? What is lacking in the current information culture, and how is it being shaped? Since independent resource centers work autonomously, there is no network of information activists. I created a zine for distribution to disseminate knowledge and interest in the topic outside the isolated subculture involved. The resulting work is the first booklet compiling a bibliography, listing of zine libraries and infoshops, and an analysis of the uprising and sustainability of these libraries, presented to both library and information scholars and those involved in the movement.
