Sign-Language in Library- and Information Science

Sign-Language users’ (in LIS) access to Information

A very significant user group are the deaf that communicate with the help of sign language. Unfortunately sign language is of national character and therefore it differs from region to region. Actually there are only a few international signs that quite international and used in different countries and language differences.

What is the purpose of dealing with sign-language in the field of Library and Information Science? The purpose of dealing with this matter is to uncover by research if there is a need to discuss and develop an international common sign-language for the use in the field of Library and Information Science so that there is provided an easier access to the relevant information - physical as well as digital and virtual - to the group of sign-language-users.

In terms of making an analysis and creating a standardized vocabulary there is also the term of Information ethics to help coming to surface and analyse. Here it is the goal to create a proper and suitable sign-language to be used in the aforementioned domain. The standardized sign language should ground upon proper ethical information and used that way.

In connection to create a standardized vocabulary it is important to create the grammar which is logic and easy to learn. But is it relevant for the LIS sector to create and use this kind of Sign-Language? Is it relevant to look further in to this field to be sure that the sign-language group easier get access to information? Is it relevant for librarians to learn a language like this in connection to serve this group of people? These questions will be answered during this poster presentation.
